Lifelong city girl transplanted.
Arms reach for the sun through poison oak, ticks and rattlesnakes.
Fear fertilized by gunshots, break-ins, traffic and noise leeches out the pores in exchange for oxygen. Wind pulsed branches replace skyscrapers. Orchard air guns replace M80s and automatic weapons meant not to frighten away birds but to kill humans.
Roots grow. Senses awaken, cleared by 360ยบ winds swirling and lifting eyes upward to leaves in constant flux hiding the treasured sounds of a thousand song birds in symphonic conversation.
The nostrils flair to capture subtle scents of wild mountain lilac and mock orange. Hot days compel pines to give up their sap, adding to the olfactory mix.
Ears tune in to bird chatter, leaf rustle, wings and leaf crunch, all signs of worlds just outside the senses emitting just enough to announce a presence. Footsteps become deafening on gravel roads, a nuisance to ears that want to capture the rustle of invisible creatures large and small, safe and potentially not.
Tongues teased by fruit still ripening, waiting for the perfect moment to taste.
Eyes need time. Roots need to dig deeper for true focus. Eyes and mind need to sync into dreamlike pace before details emerge. Trunk bark becomes wallpaper. A billion leaves seek individuality and iridescent birds come into full view. Roots must go deeper before songs coming out of trees reveal their masters and ground creatures allow a glance.
Heart and mind meld into one with pyramid peaks, white with snow, grey details and shadows.
Lifelong city girl, becoming one with new surroundings, treading lightly, hoping for her own camouflage.
